Considering an eternity band for your wedding or anniversary? Well, before you make a decision read up on the pros and cons of wearing eternity bands and why it may be beneficial to choose and half eternity ring instead.
Eternity bands are popular choices for weddings and anniversaries, but there are some factors to consider before buying one.
An eternity wedding ring is a type of wedding ring that features diamonds or gemstones that circle the entire band. The concept behind the design is to symbolize eternal love and commitment, as the stones create an endless loop.
While eternity wedding rings have gained popularity, they come with their own set of advantages and disadvantages. Here we will explore the pros and cons of an eternity wedding ring to help you make an informed decision.
Pros:
-
Symbolism: An eternity ring is the ultimate symbol of love and commitment, as the stones never end. It's a meaningful way to show your partner that your love is infinite, and you are in it for the long haul.
-
Sparkle: An eternity ring is a stunning piece of jewelry that sparkles and shines from every angle. The diamonds or gemstones catch the light beautifully and add an extra sparkle to your hand.
-
Versatility: Eternity rings are versatile and can be worn with other rings, such as an engagement ring or a plain band. They can also be stacked with other eternity rings, creating a unique and personalized look.
Cons:
-
Cost: Eternity rings tend to be more expensive than traditional wedding rings because of the amount of diamonds or gemstones used in the design. The cost can add up quickly, especially if you opt for high-quality stones.
-
Sizing: Because the stones go all the way around the band, eternity rings cannot be resized easily. It's crucial to get the sizing right from the beginning, or you may have to have the ring completely remade. This is were an half eternity band may be a better option.
-
Maintenance: The continuous wear and tear of an eternity ring can cause the stones to become loose or even fall out. This means that you may need to have the ring inspected and maintained regularly to ensure the stones are secure.
-
Comfort: Some people find that some eternity ring styles can be uncomfortable to wear, especially if they are not used to wearing rings. The continuous presence of stones around the entire band can feel bulky and can take some getting used to. This isn't an issue when you coose flush set stones. But prong set or channel set designs can be thicker overall and feel less comfortable.
Pros and Cons of an Half Eternity Ring
Behind the scenes look at the creation of this platinum band with scattered lab diamonds.
This is a custom variation of my Stella diamond eternity ring. But in this bespoke band the diamonds are only on the upper half of the ring.
Choosing half eternity rings over a full eternity band has a few advantages.
Pros:
- For once it is usually less expensive since there are fewer diamonds in the ring.
- Half eternity ring are easier to resize one size up or down since they can be cut in the lower part where only metal is. Full eternity rings are almost impossible to resize depending on the design and stone setting style.
- Half eternity rings are also more durable. The part of the ring on your palm side bumps into all kinds of things when you wear it. It you have gemstones or diamonds on the palm side of your ring they are more likely to scratch, crack or fall out needing replacement.
If you want to create your own half eternity band with scattered diamonds just choose your preferred simple plain band (domed, flat, hammered or not) and then add flush set diamonds in various sizes to fit the style you are going for and your budget.
Cons:
The one drawback with half eternity rings is that if your rings spin around easily the plain metal part may make it to the top of your finger.
You could always add a few more diamond to go further around the ring to create a 3/4 Eternity ring which only has a small metal only portion to allow for some sizing.
But there is something about full eternity bands with the sparkle all around the ring. They just look great from any angle like this yellow gold Stella band below.
Which would you choose, half eternity or a full eternity ring?
In conclusion, an eternity wedding ring is a beautiful and meaningful piece of jewelry that symbolizes eternal love and commitment. However, it's essential to consider the pros and cons before making a purchase. If you prioritize symbolism, endless sparkle, and versatility, an eternity ring may be the perfect choice for you. But, if you are concerned about cost, sizing, maintenance, or comfort, you may want to explore other options like an half eternity ring. Ultimately, the choice is yours, and the most important thing is to choose a ring that represents your love and commitment to your partner.
